What do sleep and your car have in common?

Sleep hygiene is a lot like performing maintenance on your car.

If you want your car to run well and last for a long time, you need to ensure that you’re doing things like replacing your motor oil regularly. You also want to make sure that you avoid driving over speed bumps like a maniac and the like.

Similar to taking care of your car, you want to follow proper sleep hygiene practices in order to get quality sleep. In the same way that you want to avoid speeding over road bumps while driving, you want to stop doing certain habits that may be affecting your sleep quality. 

In short, sleep hygiene consists of all the different things you should do to make sure you’re getting the best sleep possible.


Why does sleep hygiene matter?

Following proper sleep hygiene practices optimizes your sleep by normalizing your circadian rhythms, helping you fall asleep faster, reducing sleep disturbances, and increasing the amount of deep sleep that you may otherwise experience.

The importance of proper sleep hygiene has gained a lot of advocacy and support from the medical community as a form of treatment for sleep disorders like insomnia. Doctors often suggest insomnia patients to follow proper sleep hygiene practices while they’re undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy.

    Love the downloadable PDF! I personally find that staying off my cell phone before bed is crucial for me to get to bed and have a good nights rest. I also sometimes use magnesium spray which helps to promote relaxation. I like your site 🙂

      Glad you found the pdf useful. Completely agree, just yesterday I was on my phone doing some work and I forgot to turn on the blue light filter that I usually use. It took me a bit longer to fall asleep and I ended up waking up at least twice during the night. It makes a big difference.

    Thanks Juan for an informative post. What I normally find is if you are in a very active state i.e. reading or working on a project etc. Having a chamomile tea helps you winds down quite easily. I normally take it on Sunday nights because of changed sleeping pattern over the weekend. What do you think about it? Should this be taken habitually?

      Yes, chamomile tea is great to relax, especially during those later hours of the day when you want to start getting the body ready for sleep. Many people use it as a helpful remedy for insomnia and migraines. Thanks for the input Fred.
